Prepare Your Device Now for iOS 6.1 Untethered Jailbreak

The much hyped evasi0n jailbreak tool is sitting at 98% completion and will be released later today for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux PCs. Before you do anything, read this.

The requirements list on evasi0n.com says you need just five minutes to perform the jailbreak, as well as a computer running Windows XP (or later) Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (or later), or Linux x86 / x86_64. Your device will need to be running iOS 6.0 through 6.1, and you’ll also be using the USB cable that shipped with your iDevice to tether it to your PC. An important “read me” accompanies the jailbreak, stating that all users should seriously consider backing up their device to iTunes or iCloud before starting the jailbreak process.  The team doesn’t expect any nightmarish scenarios to emerge as a result of people using evasi0n to hack their iDevices, but in the offset chance that something does go wrong, it never hurts to have the contents of your phone / tablet safe and sound on a secondary medium.

“Backup your iOS device using iTunes or iCloud before using evasi0n. This way you are sure to never lose any data if something wrong happens,” according to the evad3rs. Perhaps more importantly, users who employ a passcode lock will need to switch this setting off prior to using evasi0n. The evad3rs explain, “Please disable the lock passcode of your iOS device before using evasi0n. It can cause issues.” After beginning the jailbreak process, users will have to be patient and refrain from interrupting the process. “Be patient while the jailbreaking process is running, don't start iTunes or Xcode in the meanwhile. The best is to not touch the computer until the end of the jailbreaking process,” reads another don’t.

Finally, according to the hard working team of developers behind evasi0n, “if the process gets stuck somewhere, it's safe to restart the program, reboot the device (if necessary by holding down Hold and Home until it shuts down), and rerun the process.”
