AMD Updates G-Series Operating System Support

In addition to desktop and laptop accelerated processing units, Advanced Micro Devices has chips for servers and other industrial applications. One series of such processors has just gained a broader software support.

The Sunnyvale, California-based company dedicated a whole press release to the G-Series embedded APUs and their newfound support for Windows Embedded Compact 7.

The OS brings Silverlight for Windows Embedded, an updated version of Internet Explorer (support for Adobe Flash 10.1 included) and multi-touch support.

We don't mean just any multi-touch capabilities either, but natural, intuitive input capabilities and gesture-based interaction, as AMD calls them.

“We are excited AMD has expanded G-Series APU support for Windows Embedded Compact 7, giving OEMs the resources to drive innovation in a wide range of specialized devices,” said Steven Bridgeland, product manager for Windows Embedded at Microsoft. 

“These advances will help device manufacturers’ best leverage the Windows Embedded Compact platform to build industry-leading technologies that power intelligent systems.”

Support for G-Series APUs is integrated in Kontron's MSM-eO/-N PC/104-Plus SBC, Axiomtek's CAPA111 3.5-inch SBC and other boards and modules from the AMD Based Embedded Product Catalog.

The medical, retail and industrial automation industries are where the processors will be most useful, thanks to their low-power Bobcat x86 core and Radeon graphics.
