ASUS has finally started to show off its series of motherboards compatible with Intel's upcoming line of Ivy Bridge, socket LGA 1155 central processing units (CPUs).
People dropping by the ASUS Republic of gamers (ROG) minisite will probably stumble upon the Maximus V GENE platform.
This is the latest-generation Maximus motherboard and uses the micro-ATX form factor.
That means that it fits all but the smallest desktop cases, but prospective buyers should not let this fool them: the small motherboard is very capable for its size.
Powered by the Z77 chipset, the Maximus V GENE managed to cram in two full-size PCI Express Gen. 3.0.
Both NVIDIA SLI and AMD CrossFireX multi-GPU technologies are supported, although the slots will have to work in dual x8 mode (x16 is still possible when a single slot is in use).
With this to ensure a very high graphics potential for any computer based on the mainboard, four DIMM memory slots do the same for RAM.
Quad-channel mode is supported and the maximum capacity is 32 GB, while the frequencies can go from 1,066 MHz to 2,666 MHz, depending on how much overclocking owners perform.
In addition to the above, ASUS tossed in a mini PCI Express 2.0 slot (x4) and the obligatory set of SATA ports (four SATA 6.0 Gbps, two SATA 3.0 Gbps, one mSATA for SSD caching via Intel Smart Response technology).
As for connectivity and I/O, the rear panel offers Gigabit Ethernet, four USB 3.0 ports (two more are possible via headers if we're reading this right) and four USB 2.0 ports (four more via headers) graphics outputs (HDMI, DisplayPort) and SupremeFX III gaming audio.
Finally, a ROG-exclusive PCI mPCIe combo card adds the WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G/4G and GPS that the GENE itself couldn't cram inside of it.
Needless to say, LucidLogix Virtu MVP Technology is fully supported (dynamically switches between CPU and add-in graphics, based on need).
