After seeing their iOS application rejected from the App Store, Tether decided to “innovate” and released an HTML5-based web app that lets you share your iPhone’s Internet connection with your computer.
The web-app allows you to have full Internet access on your Mac using your iPhone’s data plan. “No more WiFi hotspots, extra data plans or costly Air Cards”, says Tether. It also doesn’t require a jailbreak.
Users simply install the desktop Tether app on their computer, then access the Safari browser on their iOS device and visit http://tether.com/web.
Account holders then log in, follow the on screen instructions, and the web page should establish a connection between the iOS mobile device and the Mac or Windows PC.
Tim Burke, CEO of Tether, said “It was clear from our initial application iTether, there was enormous demand within the iPhone ecosystem. It was unfortunate that Apple decided to remove our application, only 20 hours after we launched. However, this caused us to innovate. Our underlying patent-pending technology behind Tether for iPhone is unlike anything on the market.”
Tether is currently compatible with iOS, BlackBerry and Android platforms, as well as Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows, on the computer side.
The makers say Tether can be used on numerous carriers all over the world.
“You can travel country to country without worrying how to set it up depending on the new carrier network you may be roaming on,” says Tether.
Since the service runs through your existing data plan on your iPhone, you won’t have to upgrade to any other plan, nor will you have to purchase an additional one.
“This makes Tether the obvious choice for cost savings, especially when you consider an aircard may lock you in for another 3 year contract,” says the company.
The sellers are running a launch promotion that offers the service for $15 / year through the end of next week. After the promo ends, Tether will cost $30 / year.
