Avexir Core Series Memory Pulses with Light

G.Skill isn't the only company launching memory today, since Avexir is doing the same, although its own target market segment is somewhat different from the one of before. Rather than aiming for the absolute highest tier of the worldwide market, Avexir is, instead, looking at the bulk of the mid-range segment, the mainstream as it is otherwise called. The Core Series is what it launched, though it is probably worth noting that the products have actually been public knowledge since Computex, Taipei, 2011. That said, there are four DDR3 offerings, with module capacities of 2 GB or 4 GB and speeds of 1,333 MHz or 1,600 MHz. These are only the first products, though, as the official announcement implies that others will come later, perhaps...

AMD Entry-Level HD 7000 Are Just a 28nm Die Shrink of the HD 6000 Cards

A new slide detailing AMD's upcoming entry-level Radeon HD 7000-series graphics processors made its way to the Web, revealing that these are nothing more than a die shrink of the current Turks and Caicos cores. The slide appeared on the Chinese Chiphell forum and describes AMD's dual-GPU support for the company's current Llano APUs. In addition to the names of the current Radeon HD 6000-series graphics cards compatible with AMD's Hybrid graphics technology, the document also reveals the designations of some new 7000-series GPUs and the cores that these are based upon. According to this info, the budget HD 7000-series GPUs in AMD's lineup will be noting more than 28nm die shrinks of the current Radeon HD 6000 graphics card. This was to...

ASUS and Gigabyte Don't Think They'll Sell That Many Motherboards

One wouldn't expect this, not so soon after the recent news from Intel anyway, but motherboard makers are losing optimism in regards to product sales for this quarter. Intel just launched the Sandy Bridge-E series of CPUs (central processing units). Featuring the LGA2011 socket, they are the latest and greatest chips that Intel ever made for consumers. We even reviewed the Core i7-3960X, so everyone can get a clear idea of what they are getting into. Unfortunately, some motherboard makers aren't exactly enthusiastic even now. What this means is not that they don't like the chips, but that they don't expect them, and the new motherboards designed for them, to boost overall mainboard sales that much. In fact, ASUS and Gigabyte outright...

Lenovo Preparing Some Ultrabooks for May, 2012

Looks like Lenovo is going to join the Ultrabook fleet, even if not from the first boat, according to what reports are saying on the web. Based on the same source that told us Lenovo was preparing an Android-Windows laptop, the company is making some Ultrabooks as well. Unfortunately, there's no evidence that Lenovo has had any luck in solving the price issue, quite the contrary actually. The 13-inch and 14-inch devices will cost about $1,300 (945 Euro) and $800 (581 Euro), respectively, when they start shipping in May, 2011. Nothing else was said about them, so feel free to start speculating if these super-thin machines are your thing. Then again, they haven't really charmed many people yet...

Nokia N9 PR 1.1 Firmware Available via Software Updater

Last week, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced the release of an over-the-air software update for its MeeGo-powered Nokia N9 smartphone, and the new firmware is available via the Nokia Software Updater as well, it seems. The new update, released as software version 20.2011.40-4, brought along a nice range of enhancements when compared to the previously available firmware on the device. Those users who were not able to download and install the new software over the air should try downloading and installing it via the Software Updater now. Nokia packed the new software with features like NFC tag reading, better multitasking, Swype for faster typing, new notifications for the standby screen, music controls on lock screen, and more. To...

BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 Confirmed for UK

Research in Motion UK has just added the BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 to its portfolio, but has yet to announce the smartphone's release date and price tag. Unveiled last month in Dubai, the smartphone is built in collaboration with Porsche Design and is expected to arrive in stores by the end of the year. Rumor has it that the Porsche Design P’9981 will sell for no less than US$2000 (£1255 or 1465 EUR), but the price has yet to be confirmed in the UK. The phone is built on the same chipset platform embedded onto BlackBerry Bold 9900, which combines a 1.2 GHz single core Qualcomm MSM 8655 processor, 768 MB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory. However, the phone is made of premium materials, including forged stainless steel frame, hand-wrapped...

Intel Sandy Bridge-E Review: The Core i7-3960X Gets Tested

Almost a year has passed since Intel introduced its Sandy Bridge architecture at the beginning of the year, and now the chip maker has released the enthusiast version of this core, dubbed Sandy Bridge-E. In the following article we will take a look at the most powerful LGA 2011 processor in Intel’s lineup, the Core i7-3960X, to see how well it performs compared to its predecessor. We knew about the existence of Sandy Bridge-E for quite some time now from various leaks and a series of information released by Intel itself, but this is the first time we had the chance to see such a chip in action. As most of you know, Sandy Bridge-E is compatible with motherboards using the new LGA 2011 socket and Intel X79 Express chipset, which was also...
